FPE Site Operations has won phase one and two contracts to bring Preston’s Fish Market back to its former glory.
After almost completing the restoration of Preston’s Fish Market canopy, a £385,000 contract. Preston City Council have now awarded FPE Site Operations the contract to restore phase two, the 1875 Market canopy, a £680,000 contract.
FPE Site Operations specialise in steelwork installation, rope access, repairs, site maintenance, overhauls and upgrades.
FPE Site Operations are currently working towards the completion of phase one involving the restoration of the Fish Market canopy.
Roger Speakman, FPE Site Operations Director said:
‘Investigative work took place last summer to the 90 year old grade II listed structure, which was in need of repair and restoration. We examined the columns that hold up the canopy to understand the full extent of work and proposed a solution. We have installed a rain water draining system, jet washed the canopy with a high temperature, before grit blasting the columns.’
Phase two of the project will include the refurbishment and painting of cast-iron columns and roof structures along with other repairs. The restoration project is expected to take approximately six months.
‘We are delighted to be awarded the contract for the refurbishment of the historic grade II-listed 1875 Market canopy following on from our work on restoring the Fish Market canopy. We will continue to utilise our unique skillset and experience restoring many listed structures around the country, to provide a refurbished structure that will last well into the future.’
The Markets Quarter project culminates in the construction of a cinema, restaurant and car park complex on the site of the current indoor market hall and car park.
Adrian Phillips, Director of Environment at Preston City Council, said:
‘We are pleased to announce FPE will be continuing with the great work they have done on the Fish Market canopy on the larger 1875 Market canopy.
The work undertaken on the Fish Market canopy has been of the highest quality and we look forward to FPE continuing with this standard of work over the next six months so traders, customers and the people of Preston can enjoy both these iconic structures restored to their former glory.’
